Smith Reid traces its history back to the Canberra based firm Vandenberg & Co formed in the 1970s. With rapid expansion in it's practice, the firm soon changed its name to Vandenberg Reid and a NSW office was commenced. The firm specialised in criminal law, wills and probate and litigation.

In the early 1990's Michael Smith became a partner. It was at about this time that Michael Smith and Tony Valentine became associated, with Michael briefing Tony Valentine then a member of the NSW Bar in Criminal Law matters as well as deceased estate disputes.

The firm became known as Smith Reid Attorneys-at-Law, then moving to Newtown. Later the practice of Rodney McCallum and Associates joined with Smith Reid Attorneys at Law. Subsequently Tony Valentine (who had taken a sabbatical for a year and travelled extensively overseas) commenced practice as Tony Valentine & Co from 1998 and the two solicitors formed a friendly and co-operative rivalry, cross referring work to each other regularly, seeking to exploit Tony Valentine's criminal law and litigation experience with Michael Smith's conveyancing expertise. The practices were amalgamated in 2007, becoming known as Smith Reid Attorneys. The firm has continued to work extensively in the wills and probate area with emphasis on deceased estate administration.
Times have changed since the 1970's and the technologies we use to serve our clients are in keeping with the 21st Century, but Smith Reid Attorneys maintains its strong commitment to the time honoured values of integrity, diligence and professionalism which its founders adopted and is proud to continue to serve clients locally, from other parts of Sydney and New South Wales, and internationally.
